The Forum > Politics and Current Events > UN No-Fly Zone over Libya
For those of you who haven't heard, the UN issued a no fly zone over Libya today. I'm curious to hear everyone's reactions to this. Good? Bad? Too late? Too soon? Discuss.

It's a good thing for the rebels, but I fear it'll lead to more direct interventions by foreign militaries.

I bet they're studying the strange UFO sight--
No. I'm kidding.

Apparently a no-fly zone has rapidly morphed into attacking Gaddafi ourselves.

Rather, we're just taking out his anti-air defenses, and the international community has stated that Gaddafi is not a target himself - i.e. we're only trying to protect civilians at this point. But I wouldn't be extremely surprised if what you're saying will be the situation quite soon.

Bombs are the most humanitarian thing to give other countries

Enforcing the no-fly zone over Libya is a terrible excuse for attacking Gaddafi.
They should just come out and say it. Gaddafi needs to be over thrown, but I'm worried about radicalist Muslims stealing the chance from the rebels.
Really all of the unrest in those countries are now prone to attacks from terrorist groups.

Actually, it's in the best interests of both the rebels and the terrorists for the terrorists to watch from the sidelines.

The rebels, obviously, don't want to be conflated with terrorists, because that gets munitions with "Made in USA" stamped on them lobbed in their direction. It would also give the existing governments increased international legitimacy.

But it's also in the terrorists' best interest to stay on the sidelines now. Why? Because then they can cozy up to whichever side wins (or operating with complete autonomy in a failed state like Somalia). Terrorists have no particular interest in governing, but they do have a strong interest in having a sympathetic government to provide cover for running training camps and other facilities.

So who does benefit from apparent terrorism? The current governments, but only if they can successfully blame it on terrorists. A successfully faked terrorist attack will give the existing government increased international legitimacy and undercut any international support for the rebels.
