I've never actually understood what these threads are for. Can somebody explain?

Presumably to state when you know that you're going to be gone and out of contact with the forum for awhile. My "leaves of absence" or so random, frequent, and unscheduled that I normally don't bother

Given my recent spate of inactivity, I doubt you'll notice, but....

I'm falling off the internet for a few days to a few weeks.

I have been to emotionally wrecked and school course overloaded to be on daily or even weekly.
This is the first time I've been on in a few months. I'll be back when summer starts. Maybe then I can actually spell and punctuate and not ramble incoherently.
Looking forward to coming back and seeing np8.

It just occured to me, in accordance with the previous threads of this format, shouldn't the thread title be Leave of Absence: Vierten Teil?

Vierter, I think. It's a declension thing.

And, while I now have internet access again, the reason that I fell off the intertubes still remains, so I'll be in Las Vegas for a while longer.

I'll be leaving for my summer job in Yellowstone in two days and won't be back until near the end of the summer. I've been informed that internet there is dubious so I will probably be posting even less frequently than I have been as of late.

I has internet now, so I may or may not be on with more frequency.

I'm falling off the internet again for the next week or so.

I'm in Europe until early September, so don't expect me to be on quite often.

I'm back, but for the ôsake of my education, I'll be here comparatively rarely.

I'm going to be doing PyWeek next week. Luckily I have front page posts queued up for each night so you won't even notice I'm gone.

College is once again screwing me over with paper writing and the like, so I probably won't be on much more than a couple times a month, at least until next semester.
