How about using phpBB instead? They have really simple installation instructions so that you don't need any programming knowledge to set it up and you'll have much more control over the board. Meanwhile, you can learn a lot from using it.

phpBB requires you to have a place to host it.

Which isn't any more difficult to find than a website that specializes in hosting free forums. A quick google search for "free web hosting" gives http://www.free-webhosts.com/webhosting-01.php as the first result, which is already more options than you'd need for a forum.
